The Pipeloops Mellotron

Virtual console of the Pipeloops Mellotron for Hauptwerk

The Mellotron is an electromechanical keyboard instrument that became particularly well known in rock and pop music from the 1960s onwards. Unlike an electronic synthesizer, it produces its sounds by playing back prerecorded magnetic tapes. Each key has its own tape containing a recording of an instrument or choir. This is how the characteristic string, flute and choir sounds heard on countless famous recordings were created.

The Pipeloops Mellotron brings this world of sounds to your computer as a free sample set for Hauptwerk. The graphical interface is inspired by the two-keyboard Mellotron Mark V. Unlike the original, however, the two keyboards are arranged one above the other, as on an organ. The characteristic sounds and their combinations can be selected and shaped using the two keyboards and the Tape Frame, Track Selector and Tone controls.

The sample set is unencrypted and can be used with Hauptwerk version 4.2 and later.
