The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl is a Baroque hall church built between 1743 and 1749. It is distinguished by its elaborate and artistically sophisticated frescoes and stucco work, created by renowned artists of the period. After a fire in 1936 and a bomb strike in 1944, the interior furnishings were painstakingly restored according to the historic model.
The church was originally equipped with an organ by Johann Andreas Silbermann, which was completely destroyed in the fire of 1936. It was replaced by an organ built by Willy Dolf, which, however, did not match the quality of the previous instrument. For this reason, a new organ was built in 1991 by the firm Riegner & Friedrich, which had earned an excellent reputation through numerous new instruments in the region. The organ is deliberately designed in the North German Baroque style and, with 35 stops on three manuals and pedal, is a substantial instrument. It is tuned in Werckmeister III temperament, with slight deviations.
