Stuttgart’s Stiftskirche is the city’s most important Protestant church and a central landmark in the historic city center. Its origins date back to the 12th century; its current appearance is largely shaped by the Gothic expansion carried out in the 15th century. After being severely damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt and now serves as the main church of the Protestant Regional Church in Württemberg.
The Stiftskirche holds a prominent position as a venue for organ music concerts and performances. It combines liturgical practice with a sophisticated concert program, notably the "International Organ Summer", a concert series established decades ago featuring renowned organists from around the world.
The Mühleisen organ, inaugurated in 2004, is considered one of the most important modern organs in southern Germany. It is characterized by a clear, stylistically versatile sound that allows for authentic interpretations of works ranging from the Baroque to the modern era. As such, it contributes significantly to the Stiftskirche’s national prominence as a center for organ music.
The organ was newly built as part of a major renovation of the church interior. The renovation focused on a new ceiling in the nave, with the acoustics significantly improved by large glass sails suspended from the ceiling. The organ replaces the Walcker organ installed after the war — itself a significant instrument — and incorporates a large portion of the pipe material from its predecessor. It is designed to be highly versatile in terms of both its disposition and architectural configuration, without compromising high quality for versatility. The classic Baroque organ structure is evident here as well with the Great, the pedal towers, and the Rückpositiv, which radiate freely into the space from the gallery. Behind them, in the tower room, stand the two large, romantically designed swell divisions, whose sound is not perceived quite as directly in the space and which exhibit a very wide dynamic range. The whole blends into a sonic unity ranging from the softest whisper to a mighty tutti.
